Canonical definition
Impact bias is a forecasting error in which people overestimate the intensity or duration of a future emotional reaction. An imagined event can occupy the whole forecast while the rest of everyday life receives too little attention. Errors vary by event, emotion and time horizon; this is not a rule that distress will be brief or unimportant.
